What is All Souls Anglican Church about?
We are all about Jesus!
Our faith in Jesus is both authentic to our experience and passed down from Christians in ages past. Each week, we say together our statement of faith, the Nicene Creed, which dates back to the first two ecumenical Church councils held in 325 AD and 381 AD. Each line tells us an important truth about the Trinity, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the story of our salvation in Christ.
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son
he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
We are all about our neighbors!
At All Souls, we first came together for church as a group of friends and neighbors, even though we might not be from the same neighborhood. But God brought us together in powerful ways (just ask us), and gave us the opportunity to invite others. You'll notice we are a very social group: we plan a huge party about every six weeks to celebrate some event in our community or in our faith.
When Jesus taught his disciples what was most important in life, he said two things:
"Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." ~ Matt. 22:36-40
One early Christian writer, after describing the wondrous work of God in Jesus Christ, said, "The Glory of God is the living human, and the life of humanity is the vision of God" (Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 4.20.7). We at All Souls want to share that vision of God and see God's glory alive in ourselves and our neighbors through love. We want God to be in the middle of all our relationships, to awaken our awareness to God's presence among us. We believe that "when we have fully entered into the realm of love, the world - no matter how imperfect - becomes rich and beautiful, it consists solely in opportunities for love."
Jesus said, "I am giving you a new commandment: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, so you should love one another" (John 13:34). In simplicity, authenticity, and truth, we want to follow Jesus' command in our lives.
